Mouse Skills

Participants will learn to identify basic visible components of a computer (monitor, mouse, keyboard). Learn how to turn on and off a computer system correctly, use storage devices, open, close and resize windows, and manipulate a mouse. Class time will include mouseraboics exercise.

You may bring your own laptop if you have a mouse also; otherwise a laptop will be provided for class-time use. Hands-on skills will include:

  • Turning on and off a computer system correctly
  • Saving documents and use of storage devices
  • Customization of the pointer and mouse controls
  • Opening, closing and resizing windows
  • Mouse manipulation, including selecting, double clicking and dragging items
  • Printing from BPL Print Station or wireless
Mousearobics

Computer Basics

Participants will learn basic components of computer functions and options using the GCF Learn Free tutorials. Participants will take home written information to help them understand computer terms and provide a review of class instruction. You may bring your own laptop if your operating system is Windows 07. Hands-on instruction will include:

  • Starting a program from the start menu or desktop and taskbar functions
  • Using Accessories – WordPad and notepad, paint, calculator and sticky notes, etc.
  • Resizing windows
  • Managing notification area, shortcuts
  • Managing files and folders
  • Changing file View
  • Customizing the desktop
  • Using Copy/Paste and drag and drop features
  • Using the Control Panel
  • Printing from BPL Print Station or wireless

Internet Basics

Participants will learn basic internet skills in order to optimize use of the World Wide Web. Participants will take home written information to reinforce class instruction. You may use your own laptop if you have Windows 7 Operating System and wireless capabilities. Class instruction uses Internet Explorer and Google Chrome browsers. Hands-on instruction will include:

  • Recognizing and navigating to a web address (URL)/Searching
  • Working with Options and Themes
  • Setting your Home Page – (i.e. Custom Google/Yahoo Home)
  • Working with Tabs and opening links in new windows
  • Using a browser's menu and toolbars including Favorites Bar, Favorites Folder and other options
  • Using Suggested Sites
  • Using InPrivate Browsing/secure sites/browsing history
  • Managing pop-ups; downloading and uploading; compatibility mode
  • Printing using print buttons inside websites/selection printing
  • Printing from BPL Print Station or wireless printing

Social Networking

Participants will learn basic social networking skills for Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Instruction will include on how to create accounts.

Email Basics

Participants will learn major components of email usage and practice basic skills to send and receive emails. If you currently have an email address, please list this on the sign-up sheet. Bring your password to class. If you do not have one, we will create one 15 minutes before the start of class.

You can follow along in your preferred email; however, this class will use Gmail. You may use your own laptop if you have wireless capabilities. Hands-on instruction will include:

  • Set up free account (If you don’t have one, arrive 15 minutes before scheduled start time.)
  • Receiving/sending emails
  • Opening/Sending file attachments
  • Replying to messages
  • Forwarding messages
  • Deleting messages
  • Creating a contact(s)
  • Sending email to a contact(s)
  • Adding text formatting/pictures/symbols

Excel

Participants will learn basic Microsoft Excel creating spreadsheets and lists to help keep you organized. You may use your own laptop if you have Windows 7 Operating System. Hands-on instruction will include:

  • Components and features of Excel
  • Formatting and typing in cells
  • Creating Charts and Graphs
  • Sorting Data
  • AutoSum and Excel equations
  • Multiple sheets
  • Saving and printing spreadsheets
  • Printing from BPL Print Station or wireless printing

Word I

Participants will learn components of Microsoft Word 2010 to create a basic document with style. Learn the functions of the Microsoft Office button, toolbars and launcher boxes. You may bring your own laptop if you have Microsoft Word 2010 or 2007 installed. The class will use hands-on practice to:

  • Create and save documents in various formats
  • Format text
  • Cut, Copy & Paste, and Drag
  • Review Tab functions (Spelling & Grammar, Thesaurus, etc.)
  • Review Word Option functions
  • Apply headers and footers
  • Apply paragraph alignment and spacing
  • Use Find and Replace functions
  • Apply page setups (margins, orientations, etc.)
  • Printing from BPL Print Station or wireless printing.

Word II

Participants will learn advanced components of Microsoft Word 2007 to create enhanced documents. The class will use hands-on practice to:

  • Create bulleted and numbered lists
  • Add special symbols
  • Format with columns and page breaks
  • Create tables
  • Add graphics/resize and crop images
  • Customize with borders and colors
  • Printing from BPL Print Station or wireless

PowerPoint

Participants will learn basic and some advanced components of Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 to create enhanced presentations. Hands-on instruction will include:

  • Slide designs and layouts
  • Insert tables and pictures
  • Insert text boxes and WordArt
  • Insert AutoShapes
  • Add bulleted or numbered lists
  • Slide management
  • Transitions and Sound clips
  • Printing from BPL Print Station or wireless
